You could buy into the wrong dream
This is a particularly interesting thread for me as I have two sons that are about to start their careers. One has just finished a broadcasting degree and the other about to come back (on Wednesday) from doing a year of Martial Arts in China - he's just chucked in his University place because he thinks he'll be bored.

So this is me re-thinking the advice that I'll give them (not that I expect them to listen - but I owe it to them to clarify my own thinking.)
Also a bit about me, my career nightmare happened about fiveteen years ago - after seven really good years I was head hunted to a very senior position - bought a large house with a huge morgage. The position didn't work out and I ended up without a job at exactly the time the housing market crashed. You can imagine the rest. Oh and we were about to have out third child.
It took me six months to find another job which only lasted a year. Luckily I then found a job which lasted 12 years which gave me some great development opportunities, including enabling me to build up my current business 4 years before I left them.
The moral for me is that things will go wrong. There is nothing wrong with buying into the wrong dream; it may be painful but the worst is you'll learn about yourself. And the second time will be easier. And you might then find the right dream.
The piece of advice I wish I had earlier - came from a book by Edgar Schien from the Sloane Management School at MIT (I can't remember the title.) which basically said up to about the age of 28 (might be be the wrong age) people ought to go out and try as many types of jobs as possible; so they can find out what they really enjoy and what they're good at.
And that experience is the only way that they'll find out.
So the advice I'll give my children is to try things; it doesn't matter if it doesn't work out, but always keep exploring and learning. (not that they'll listen.)
Take care
