Kenricks NLP persuasion competition - response 2
The sharpest of the sharp persuaders are on my list.
Here's the next winner:
Kenrick,
In working his brilliant persuasive magic, Erickson's communication appears to be very simple on the surface. A deeper analysis of his language and behavior reveals techniques that are sophisticated and complex.
Erickson used multi-level communication and advanced psychological tactics in his persuasion with this boy, including:
1. Unconsciously establishing rapport by ordering the doctor to sit down (covertly sending the message to the boy that "we are not going to let him interfere", and building trust with the boy by "moving over to his side").
2. Employing the "Apply to Self" Metaprogram. When the boy stated, "You can't use that electric shock stuff on me", Erickson metaphorically "shocked" the boy through the unexpected and abrupt manner in which he behaved and communicated.
3. Pattern Interrupt. By doing the unexpected and utilizing the element of surprize, Erickson interruped the boy's unconscious and automatic patterns. The boy was expecting Erickson to treat him exactly as the previous doctors had (take a long history, focus on the boy's innapropriate behavior, lable him, etc.). When Erickson did not do this, but instead did the unexpected, the boy's pattern was interrupted, making him - unconsciously - available to Erickson's suggestions for change.
4. Pre-supposition combined with covert hypnosis / embedded command. Once rapport had been established, and the boy's pattern interrupted, Erickson "pre-supposed" the positive by assuming in advance that the boy would change. Undoubtedly, this pre-suuposition was delivered using an embedded command something like this: (underlined portion delivered with a slightly different tonality, empasis, or visual marker designed to send that "command" directly to the boy's subconscious mind without being recognized by his conscious mind):
"How suprised will you be when all your behavior changes completely next week?"
5. Creating a context to allow what he wanted to happen naturally. Erickson built psychological leverage and created the perfect context to allow the boy to make a new choice, one that would happen naturally. Rather than try to "talk" the boy into making a new, more positive choice, Erickson created a context that freed the boy to make new choices about his behavior, naturally.
6. Accessing Unconscious Resources. Erickson did not tell the boy what his new behavior would be, but allowed the boy's unconscious mind to have the freedom to determine what "behavior changes" it would select. Erickson gently led him in the right direction, and empowered the boy to utilize his own awesome unconscous resources to select the specific changes best suited for him.
Kenrick, how delighted will you be when you realize that this answer is the best, most thorough one you have recieved? And I am wondering whether you will notify me that I have won the contest on Monday, or if you will notify me on Wednesday...
Cheers,
Bill
