NLP and seduction

NLP and seduction - Ross Jeffries.

As part of NLP our practitioner and master practitioner trainings I always leave a 100 or so NLP and business books about so people can read through them and decide what may be of interest at leisure.

One of the books I leave half hidden at the back is Ross Jeffries - Speed Seduction Home study course workbook.

We still have a few places on Doug O'Brien and Jonathan Altfeld's UK tour Do book. You will genuinely learn a lot that's useful to you.

Without fail during every seminar one delegate (man or women) will pick it up and disappear for all the coffee breaks absorbing every detail in rapt, amazed and totally speechless attention. While it's blatantly aimed at men the topic seems to be of interest to all.

The cover is designed so nobody would be likely to read it on a train and the content is not for the fient hearted.

My view (which in many way sums at my view of NLP) is that anyone who uses these techniques in the wrong way is likely be thought of as rather strange. In the right way with the right person you may end up communicating on a wholly different level.

Ross is website is http://www.speedseduction.net/default.asp

In many ways it looks fairly tacky; and the content more than lives up to this. But remember - the approach has been modelled from what works.

You could buy into the wrong dream

This is a particularly interesting thread for me as I have two sons that are about to start their careers. One has just finished a broadcasting degree and the other about to come back (on Wednesday) from doing a year of Martial Arts in China - he's just chucked in his University place because he thinks he'll be bored.

See the complete ecademy thread here

So this is me re-thinking the advice that I'll give them (not that I expect them to listen - but I owe it to them to clarify my own thinking.)

Also a bit about me, my career nightmare happened about fiveteen years ago - after seven really good years I was head hunted to a very senior position - bought a large house with a huge morgage. The position didn't work out and I ended up without a job at exactly the time the housing market crashed. You can imagine the rest. Oh and we were about to have out third child.

It took me six months to find another job which only lasted a year. Luckily I then found a job which lasted 12 years which gave me some great development opportunities, including enabling me to build up my current business 4 years before I left them.

The moral for me is that things will go wrong. There is nothing wrong with buying into the wrong dream; it may be painful but the worst is you'll learn about yourself. And the second time will be easier. And you might then find the right dream.

The piece of advice I wish I had earlier - came from a book by Edgar Schien from the Sloane Management School at MIT (I can't remember the title.) which basically said up to about the age of 28 (might be be the wrong age) people ought to go out and try as many types of jobs as possible; so they can find out what they really enjoy and what they're good at.

And that experience is the only way that they'll find out.

So the advice I'll give my children is to try things; it doesn't matter if it doesn't work out, but always keep exploring and learning. (not that they'll listen.)

Thoughts on hypnosis in business

Hypnosis for communication in business

Many successful business people are attending classes on Hypnosis each year. (Even if they ask for the invoice to read influencing skills!)

Why? There are many reasons. One reason is the process of understanding the basic principles of hypnosis enables them to expand their own communication toolset.

Aspiring managers from a wide range of disciplines from business coaches, change managers, sales managers and account directors to accountants and actuaries attend hypnotic influence classes each year.

It’s a way of adding to their communications ‘tool kit’ and building on their intuitive and creative skills.

Benefits in understanding the basic principles of hypnosis:

Improving your general communication skills

Improving your communication skills in relation to specific business areas e.g. presenting, executive and business coaching, sales, consulting, leadership and negotiation

Developing the ability to entertain

Help with issues like ‘smoking’ ‘weight loss’ and ‘confidence’

Personal development and generative change

From a business point of view 1, 2 & 5 are the most relevant; much of business involves communication skills and even a small improvement can make a difference to performance.

Personal development and generative change makes a pervasive improvement to the results you produce; if you’re comfortable and true to yourself you’ll tend to work better and automatically influence others in a positive way.

The power of hypnosis:

Hypnosis is natural and is about using resources that we all have

Hypnosis is about developing better conscious/unconscious communication

Hypnosis is normally about helping yourself or others focus your attention or manage your state in a more useful way. There are times to focus away from discomfort and times to develop states that enable you to access more mental resources

‘Personal connection’ is more important than any technique

You’ve heard it before - the essential factor is the ability to listen and be ever aware of what’s occurring.

The Hypnosis skill set

Agreeing outcomes

Managing your emotional state

Developing rapport

Use of language, including rhythm and tone as well as the impact of words

The impact of stories

Specific techniques

These are many of the basic skills that anyone involved in ‘influence’ will already have developed or partially developed. It is also why learning about hypnosis can help those who rely on communicating effectively in business.

Hypnosis as a valuable aid

Learning about hypnosis is a valuable aid to improving your communication skills. Like any skills the more you practice the better you get. Learning and communicating with others involves learning about yourself; this needs personal courage. The rewards, however, are significant. It is not essential to become an expert hypnotist to increase your communication and intuition skills.

A range of books on hypnosis is available from here

Also an introduction CD on hypnotic language patterns is available here

I'm happy to take any questions or comments on this!

Take care
