Doubt - what if it doesn't work!

Doubt by Paul Lemberg.

Please subscribe to our free coaching tips newsletter if you would like to receive a monthly coaching tip. Or visit www.execoach.net if you would like a business or executive coach

Doubt - what if it dosn't work by Paul Lemberg.

What if it doesn’t work? Who hasn’t had such thoughts?

“It won’t work. It isn’t right. They won’t like it. It will fail.” And in more insidious, more personal forms: “I’m not good enough. I will fail.”

Who hasn’t thought such thoughts when you are smack dab in the middle of the most important thing you’ve ever done?Doubt is part of the human condition. If you are functioning on a high level, working far outside your comfort zone, "doubt" is inevitable.

After all – you are working in realms with which you are unfamiliar. Perhaps you really don’t know what you’re doing.Uncertainty that you will reach your destination is logical when sailing uncharted waters. But if you were familiar with the terrain and had all the "knowledge" necessary, you wouldn’t be on the verge of a "breakthrough" .

You certainly wouldn’t be outrunning change.Doubt can stop you dead in your tracks; cause you to seize up and cease "action" . “Oh my God, I can’t go on. I’m all "wrong" . I’m bound to fail.”What if you could have thoughts like these and keep going? Can you have "doubt" – grave doubt – and still do what you have to?

Of course you can!

The problem is that most people think their doubts must be paid attention to, that they reflect reality. They don’t.There are two types of "doubt" . The first is what I’ll call “technological doubt” – doubt about your approach and your methods.

This kind of doubt can serve a positive "purpose" , causing you to double-check, to think through your plans and make sure you are taking your best shot. The other is “fearful doubt" ” – the automatic human response to anything that places you out on a limb. Ignore this doubt. Trust your gut to tell you the difference.Acknowledge that you have doubts, embrace them as part of your humanity – then suck it up and keep going. Even though these doubts may make your stomach hurt – keep doing whatever it is you said you had to do next.

Like many things, you don’t have to like "doubt" , it doesn’t have to feel good, and it doesn’t have to get in your way.Doubt is very effective at keeping you behind the curve. Let others be out on the bleeding edge. Let others take the arrows. Things are changing so fast, let’s wait and see. Right? It’s a fact – if you are going to run your business as an innovator – you’re going to have to face "doubt" , and lots of it.

You may not have it personally – but your people or your partners will. The only "questions" is, how are you going to deal with it?

Make another list. This "time" , make a list of your doubts. Don’t be shy. Write them out on paper, one after the next, for all your consciousness to see. Exhaust the list. Acknowledge you have such doubts, that they are part of your human heritage.

Throw the list away.

Now, get back to doing whatever it was you were doing.

Kenrick's tractor story

Thanks for being a subsciber of the Influence Tips Newsletter. It means a lot to me that you read our emails.

Here's an article you'll enjoy.

Why Do I do This? Here’s a story about me...

When I was 9 years old my family moved onto my Grandfather's farm. It was an interesting place, especially for a 9 year old boy. Grandpa grew a 2 acre garden, and in this garden I learned a lot. Particularly that I didn’t like weeds! Grandpa had a great way of motivating me, he would give us a dollar to help him pull weeds. At the end of the day he would walk thru the garden and for every weed that we missed we had to give him back 10 cents.

Needless to say Grandpa didn’t give us lots of money!

Grandpa did teach me some really cool things. He had this big John Deere tractor, a really old tractor. He would plow the fields with it and I would get to ride with him sometimes. He was really safety conscious and he would let me ride along. After some time and instruction he would let me get on and actually drive. He would hook it up and aim it straight and pretty soon I would get on and take it down the road. That was great fun.

Imagine being a nine year old kid and being able to drive this great big powerful tractor!

One day he decided that we would replace the fence posts on the property. So we would take the tractor, back up to the fence posts; hook it up and pull the post out, and we'd do this for post, after post, after post. And he taught me to do it.

Of course he was always literally right there with me, doing this. But I loved it! This was something I lived for, so I would get up early and clean up. I would get everything ready to go in the hopes that he would let me pull the fence posts. Well, one day he took off for some errands and my Uncle was there to spend some time with us. My Uncle decided that he wanted to help out around the farm while my Grandpa was gone, so my Uncle asked what we were doing that he could help with?

And I showed him that we were doing posts. My uncle said "Great! Lets get the tractor and we'll go pull posts.” And I said, "Well listen, Grandpa's taught me how to do it and I'm the one that does these posts, so with your permission and with your supervision, would you allow me to show you how I do this?"

He was a PhD in Education, and he's going " Yeah yeah. OK sure." Even back then at age 9, I appealed to his sense of authority. I got on the tractor and we were going up this hill. It was a driveway and to the left of the hill, down went a big bank into a pond - about a few hundred feet down the bank.

We would go up the hill and back into a post, and then pull it and keep going like that. Well, finally we were in a position were we had to turn around, because we could no longer go up the hill. With my nine year old wisdom I decided that what I would do is go down the bank, and then turn and head back up.

Not having driven tractor that much at that point, I didn't realize the consequences. I turned and started to go down the bank and I lost control of the tractor. Down it hurtled towards the pond!

I was scared to death.

I turned it as hard as I could - uphill - to try to come back up and around, thinking that I would just be okay! And it kinda veered away from the pond but it didn't really head back up the hill and then I was jumping on the brakes as hard as I could!

All of a sudden the tractor stopped!

So I tried to act rather nonchalant and I jumped off and I said "Oops!". Of course my uncle wasn't happy about this. He took one look at it and said, "Get away - don't go anywhere near it!" The tractor was leaning pretty far - the uphill wheel was not touching the ground!

About that time Grandpa comes back. My Uncle had the pleasure of ex-plaining to him that he was letting me pull the fence posts when this had happened. My Grandpa was very upset and very angry that I had talked my Uncle into letting me drive the tractor!

Grandpa went and had a look at the tractor and the minute he looked at it, his face went white! I'd never seen the like, ever. He took a look at me and another look at the tractor and he just shook his head. We walked over to where the tractor had stopped and it was stopped just a few inches from an old abandoned well. The well hole was covered by a rotten piece of plywood. And that well hole was just big enough that if the tractor had gone in, it would have severed me right at the waist! There were no skid marks. Grandpa was convinced I jumped on the clutch instead of the breaks. The key was still on. He was convinced that there was absolutely no reason the tractor should have stopped.

Grandpa, got on the tractor very gingerly, it started with a push of the button and finally got it turned around and was able to back up the hill. A couple of hours later after he had settled down, he brought us up there and showed us what that well was and what could have happened.
Grandpa wrote a story that was published in the paper, and it was picked up nationally. It was called "Angels know about tractors". Grandpa told everyone and especially me over the next few years,

"God must have a very special purpose to save little Ricky! He wasn't killed by the well or by having the tractor flip over - like it could have! ".

I thought about that a lot in my life, as I grew up. And I think the special purpose that has dominated my life is teaching persuasion skills.

This newsletter is about me sharing that purpose with you and helping you to learn from my experience - what works, what doesn't work, and how to make persuasion something that will make a gigantic difference in your life.

It certainly has done that for me!

Major Pre-announcement

Now, I have a major pre-announcement to make about the largest combined Video CD and Audio CD package that I have - ever - released. (I only decided to do this after being besieged with requests to release this package.) I did not intend to make this material available. However the requests and even more important, the stunning results reported by the participants in these events, changed my mind. You've persuaded me!

Kenrick's Breakthroughs in Persuasion has been fully edited and is in the final stages of preparation to be ready to ship.

I'm very proud to make this available! I busted my butt making sure that this set contains tons of the best, most effective and advanced persuasion information. And ensuring that you will easily learn it. I will obviously be letting you know more about this over the next week.
Warmly,
Kenrick Cleveland

P.S. It's 48 CD's of material! Plus many, many bonuses!
P.P.S. And for the first time ever, it includes specific cutting-edge accelerated learning tools and techniques that were used in those seminars to fast track people's unconscious use of these persuasion weapons.
