In this issue you'll find:Verbal pacing is one of the most powerful and easy to use techniques available. Here's a primer on this core influential tactic that forms the basis of many other persuasive language tactics to come!

Pacing 101 - Verbal Pacing

Verbal Pacing is talking about things that are verifiably true in the person's ongoing experience. Pacing is a global action and it encompasses matching, mirroring, rhythm, speed, or tonality etc.

Now how does verbal Pacing work? Again pacing is things that are verifiably true in the persons ongoing experience. If I said to you, "Somewhere in the room you hear a sound as you see these words on the page." - you don't have to take my word for any of this, you can sense and experience that that's true for yourself.

I can say that, "You're sitting there comfortably in your chair." and that's a bit of a stretch. You would at least agree that you are sitting in your chair. I could say that "You are sitting in your chair with your feet on the ground", and for most of you that's probably pretty accurate. So I can make some assumptions.

Notice when I said that "You're comfortable", that's not necessarily so. That would not really be a pace at this moment. What else would not be a pace? I could say, "You're wide awake, you're alert and you're really ready to learn." Well maybe you are, maybe you're not... Maybe you're not wide awake, maybe you didn't sleep very well last night. So I'm presupposing a lot when I say that.

You're sitting there, and I'm here, and you're thinking about the different kinds of things here that I'm writing about. You're reading this newsletter and in letters like this people are usually reading this to learn and I suspect that's why you're reading this too. And as you read this, thoughts are obviously beginning to bubble up about how you might want to learn more about how to persuade people.

So If I keep saying things that are verifiably true, then you pretty much have to just keep saying yes. You don't disagree with me. And then I can add a piece that I want to persuade you about.

We want to learn to be able to pace and to do that, we want to learn to talk about things that are true and verifiable.

Another powerful action to pace is speed of speaking. I've found that people will speak about as fast as they comprehend. If you are dealing with someone who is speaking real slow, and they are taking a bit of time to get across their message, you would not want to reply to them at 100 miles an hour, to try to get rapport with them. You would want to speak at about the same speed they do. Just know that is just about how fast their thinking. You just want to go along with that speed.

This is a more covert way to do pacing. It is not in your face as just directly pacing the person right away,
